Communicable Disease Program

The Communicable Disease Program is composed of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control, Immunizations, Refugee Health, Tuberculosis, Rabies Control, and Adult Health HIV/STI Clinic. The primary purpose of the Communicable Disease Program is to:

  • Conduct thorough reporting and investigation of all reports of communicable disease (including outbreaks).
  • Promptly implement communicable disease control measures when needed.
  • Ensure compliance with North Carolina communicable disease statutes and rules through implementation of appropriate control measures.
  • Educate healthcare providers, facilities, organizations, and others regarding all aspects of communicable disease, in order to ensure and protect the health of the community.

What about HIPAA?

For communicable disease, the HIPAA privacy law allows for the release of information to a Communicable Disease Nurse from Durham County Public Health over the phone or by fax without a faxed or written request.

Who is required to report a communicable disease?

NC law requires the following people to make reports to the local health director/health department:

  • Physicians
  • School principals and childcare operators
  • Operators of restaurants/other food or drink establishments
  • Persons in charge of laboratories
