Community STI & HIV Testing

HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to present challenges for communities in Durham and around the state of North Carolina. Durham County’s “I Take Testing Seriously” (ITTS) Program works with the Durham community to decrease rates of HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis C, Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia.

Our team provides the following services:

  • Free and confidential HIV/STI screenings.
  • One-on-one or group sexual health education classes or workshops.
  • Free condoms, lubricant, dental dams, and more.
  • Free and confidential Safe Syringe Kits and/or Naloxone (Narcan).
  • PrEP referrals.

Community Testing

A key prevention strategy is our comprehensive community testing program. Durham County health educators are proud to provide free and confidential HIV/STI screenings throughout Durham and are committed to meeting community “where they are” to make services accessible as possible. Screenings are comprehensive, and we are pleased to offer blood, urine, throat, and rectal screenings which are able to detect a broad range of common communicable STIs.

Community Outreach, Condom Distribution, & Programming

We are also happy to provide comprehensive education and resources pertaining to sexual health. Public Health Education Specialists are able to provide a variety of different programs in different formats, modalities, and settings to educate members of the Durham Community about their sexual health.

Additionally, we offer distribution of safer sex items, upon request, such as:

  • condoms
  • dental dams
  • lubricants

Ready, Set, PrEP

We also offer a quick start for PrEP through the Durham County Department of Public Health’s Adult Health Clinic.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective medication that can prevent someone from getting HIV when taken as prescribed. PrEP could be a great addition to someone’s sexual well-being toolkit if they feel that they may be at risk for being exposed to HIV.

Fast Track Cities

The Fast-Track Cities initiative is a global partnership aimed at accelerating the HIV/AIDS response in cities worldwide. Cities commit by signing the Paris Declaration, initially focused on the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets and now aiming for zero new HIV infections and zero AIDS-related deaths. Supported by key partners like the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care (IAPAC), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), United Nations Human Settlement Program (UN-Habitat), and the City of Paris, the initiative emphasizes data transparency and progress monitoring through a global web portal. IAPAC provides technical assistance, implementation planning, capacity-building, stigma reduction, and quality of life assessments for people living with HIV.
