Durham County Public Health

Tooth Ferry

The Tooth Ferry is Durham County’s mobile dental unit that visits our elementary schools. We are part of the Durham County Department of Public Health and are not affiliated with other mobile dental units operating in North Carolina.

The Tooth Ferry is an innovative program that brings dental services directly to your school. This allows students to remain in class and learning. We use the latest technology in equipment. In addition to having two dental chairs on the Tooth Ferry, we also have the option of bringing portable equipment into the school.

If your child was seen on the Tooth Ferry and we cannot complete treatment while we are at their school, they can come into the Public Health Dental Clinic to finish their care.

Our Patients

  • Children attending Durham’s Public Elementary Schools.

  • Tooth Ferry school assignments change each year.

Note: Currently, the Tooth Ferry does not schedule with organizations other than Durham Public Schools elementary programs.

Eligibility

Children without a dental home are seen on the Tooth Ferry with parental/guardian permission. New patients need to come to first appointment with completed forms.

Tooth Ferry accepts Medicaid and patients without insurance. For those who are uninsured, fees are based on a sliding scale according to income and family size.

We will never ask students to come to school with money. If fees are due, our program will contact the family to make arrangement for payment.
