How do I report child abuse or neglect?
Reports can be made by calling the CPS Hotline at (919) 560-8424 during normal business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
On nights, weekends, and holidays, reports can be made by calling the Durham County non-emergency number at (919) 560-4600 and asking for the social worker on-call.
What type of assessment approach does Durham County utilize?
The agency utilizes a multiple-response approach to assess allegations of abuse and neglect. Reports of child abuse or serious neglect are assigned to the Investigative Assessment track. Reports or most forms of child neglect are assigned to the Family Assessment track.
How long is an assessment open?
We strive to complete both investigative and family assessments within 45 days.
What are the possible case outcomes?
Family Assessment case outcomes are:
- Child Protective Services Not Needed
- Services Provided; Child Protective Services No Longer Needed
- Child Protective Services needed and continued services are provided by CPS In-Home or Child Placement and Permanency Services
Investigative Assessment case outcomes are:
- Substantiated and continued services may be provided by CPS In-Home or Child Placement and Permanency Services
- Unsubstantiated
