Farmland Protection Advisory Board
About Farmland Protection in Durham County
Durham County has a strong agricultural heritage. The farmland that is the fabric of this heritage is facing extreme developmental pressures. Durham County is projected to lose about 1,600 acres of farmland to development by 2040. The benefits of farmland are numerous: They provide food, lumber products, agritourism, and protection of our natural resources.
In 1996, the Durham Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) created the Farmland Protection Ordinance which established the Farmland Protection Advisory Board. The goals of the ordinance and Board are to protect and enhance agriculture in Durham County.
Mission
The mission of the Farmland Protection Advisory Board (FPAB) is to foster the wise use of our farmland resources by working with farmers, the community, government entities, agencies, and other resources to identify and implement strategies for the preservation and enhancement of our farming community while protecting the land and soil for future generations.
To promote this mission, the FPAB is responsible for:
- Reviewing and approving Voluntary Ag District applications.
- Providing guidance to DCo Open Space staff in acquisition of conservation easements through their Farmland Protection Program.
- Advising staff and BOCC on projects, programs, or issues affecting the agricultural community.
- Educating the public and farming community on the benefits of protecting and continuing farming.
- Promoting, administering, and implementing the Farmland Protection Plan and Ordinance.
The Farmland Protection Advisory Board is comprised of 15 Durham County residents including:
- Representative landowners who are actively farming from each of the Voluntary Ag Districts: Flat River, Little River, Eno, Falls, and Cape Fear.
- Representatives from the BOCC, SWCD Board, Durham County Farm Bureau, and Durham Open Space and Trails Commission.
