Stream Restoration
Stream Restoration and Stormwater Projects
Healthy streams provide cleaner water, improve aquatic habitat, and can reduce the threat of flooding. In Durham County, nutrient enrichment and sediment load threaten the quality of our waterways. Streams in Durham County feed into several drinking water reservoirs including Lake Mitchie, Little River, Falls Lake, and Jordan Lake.
Durham Soil and Water restores degraded streams throughout the county. Our goal is to address water quality issues caused by historic pressures and increased urbanization while enhancing aquatic and terrestrial habitat.
Streamflow Rehabilitation Assistance Program
The Streamflow Rehabilitation Assistance Program (StRAP) provides funding for projects that help reduce flooding, restore streams, and protect the integrity of drainage infrastructure across North Carolina’s waterways.
Eligible projects include:
- Vegetative debris removal
- Instream sediment removal
- Streambank stabilization
- Stream restoration
- Repair and rehabilitation of P.L. 566 Small Watershed Structures.
Funds are awarded to organizations such as Soil and Water Conservation Districts. You can suggest a StRAP project in Durham County by contacting our office at 919-560-0558.
