Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee

The Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee’s (NHCAC) primary function is to maintain the rights of residents living in nursing homes. The committee serves as the link between the community and the homes, seeking to increase community involvement and, at the same time, promoting community education and awareness of the needs of the resident in these homes.

The committee members are local citizens who are appointed by the Durham County Board of Commissioners as volunteer grassroots advocates for the residents. They receive training and technical assistance from the Region J Ombudsman.

Members of the Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee visit Durham County nursing home's quarterly to speak with residents to ensure their rights are being upheld as well as encourage nursing homes to participate in culture change efforts, such as, consistent assignment and offering more personal choices to their residents.
