Cognitive Behavioral Intervention (CBI) Curriculum

JSD uses The Courage to Change Interactive Journaling System which is an evidence-based curriculum that focuses on personal growth by building self-awareness, emotional regulation, and personal responsibility. This evidence-based program provides tools for individuals to develop healthier coping strategies and make positive life changes.

Participants will start with the “Getting Started" Journal which helps participants become familiar with the program and learn what to expect in the class. Other journal assignments will be based on information gathered during the intake and during class by the counselor.

Other journals available:

  • Social Values examines a participant’s core values, and how those values relate to choices being made.
  • Responsible Thinking encourages participants to examine their thoughts and identify thinking patterns that have led to trouble.
  • Self-Control focuses on feelings that the participants experience most often and that lead to a loss of Self Control.
  • Family Ties helps participants to evaluate their family relationships and the roles they play in those relationships.
  • Peer Relationships examines past and present peer relationships and has the participant identify them as healthy or unhealthy.
  • Recreation and Leisure provides participants with an opportunity to explore how they spend their free time.
  • Seeking Employment helps participants identify education and training they may need to reach their employment goals.
  • Substance Use is designed to help participants take a closer look at the roles alcohol and other drugs have played in their lives.

CBI is facilitated in an open enrollment format. Participants are given opportunity in the class to complete exercises in their journals and then are led by Cognitive Behavioral Counselors to share some of their assignment. Group discussion is encouraged and participants often offer encouragement to one another relating to their experiences.

CBI Class Information

CBI is offered mornings, afternoons, and evenings to provide flexibility. Sessions are scheduled for 1.5 hours and meet twice weekly. 24 sessions to complete is standard though referrals can be submitted for 16, 12 or 8 sessions.
