Stormwater Asset Management

With GIS technology, Durham County Stormwater is seamlessly able to manage all Stormwater Control Measures (SCMs) and Stormwater Permits in the County.  With a GIS mobile application, staff are able to perform inspections of SCMs in the field.  A web mapping application displays all projects and SCMs, and a dashboard is used for analytics.

Stream Determinations

Durham County staff performs Stream Determinations when requested for streams located within the Cape Fear River Basin.  GIS technology is used by staff to accurately map the stream with a high-accuracy GPS unit.  Our GIS Analyst created a mobile application using Survey123 for field staff to evaluate the hydrological, physical, and biological characteristics of the stream, and automatically score the stream in accordance with NCDEQ standards.

Illicit Discharge Program

Tracking Illicit Discharge and Elimination (IDDE) within Durham County is made simple with our custom GIS data management application.  Using GIS, Durham County Stormwater staff are able to visually track complaints, identify trends, and document all investigations to address illicit discharges.

Erosion Control Inspections

Durham County Erosion Control staff frequently inspect development sites with Land Disturbance Permits.  Inspectors utilize a custom GIS mobile application to document inspections in the field, and to automatically generate inspection reports.  A GIS database integrates erosion control inspections with all other components of Land Disturbance Permits for seamless project management.

Impervious Areas

Impervious surface calculations are performed annually using GIS technology for the Stormwater Utility Fee.  Polygons are created for each property outside of Durham City Limits, and GIS software is able to automatically calculate the square footage of the impervious area.
