Litter Control, Investigation, And Enforcement
The Solid Waste Division is responsible for enforcing the Durham County Solid Waste Ordinance. This ordinance addresses concerns of public health nuisances and illegally dumped waste in the unincorporated areas of Durham County (outside of City limits). This protects the health, safety, and welfare of those individuals living, working, and doing business in the County of Durham.
The Division also enforces the hazardous vehicle portion of Article IV of the Durham County Traffic and Vehicles Ordinance (Abandoned and Junked Motor Vehicles). Conditions that would cause a vehicle to be deemed hazardous can include broken windows, being left on jacks for an extended period of time, and leaking fluids. Not running or not having tags does not make a vehicle hazardous. Abandoned vehicles should be directed to the Durham County Sheriff's Office at 919-560-0900.
