Transportation
What We Do
The Durham County Transportation Department is charged with improving transportation infrastructure and increasing the mobility options available within Durham County. Through collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (DCHC MPO), the City of Durham, as well as other local and regional partners, we ensure a reliable and multifaceted transportation system within the County.
The Department contributes to the planning and development of various projects related to roadway, bicycle and pedestrian, rail, and transit infrastructure and operation.
Improving Transit
Durham County Transit Plan
The Durham County Transit Plan was adopted in 2023. The plan guides how we invest, spend, expand, and prioritize our public transit system using sales tax and fee revenues raised in Durham County.
Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning
Updated Durham Bike + Walk Plan
The City of Durham and Durham County are partnering to update the Durham Bike+Walk Plan. The 2017 Durham Bike+Walk Plan included 75 priority projects to make walking and bicycling safer and more convenient in Durham. The updated Durham Bike+Walk Plan will include comprehensive recommendations and priority projects for new sidewalks, bike facilities, and greenways across Durham County.
Improving Transit
Staff Working Group
The Durham County Staff Working Group (“SWG”) supports the implementation of the Durham County Transit Plan. The SWG coordinates the planning and implementation of the Annual Work Program, while also facilitating the development of the Multi-Year Vison Plan. The SWG will also serve in an advisory role to the Durham County Board of Commissioners, DCHC MPO Board, and the GoTriangle Board of Trustees.
Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning
Durham-to-Roxboro Rail Trail Study
This plan is a collaborative effort led by five key organizations to assess the transformation of the existing 18-mile inactive rail corridor within Durham County into a multi-use trail. This proposed rail trail would ultimately establish a 26-mile trail network linking downtown Durham to Roxboro.
