County Investments

Durham County Library

Durham County Library underwent a major renovation in 2021 and offers 65,000 square feet of educational and learning space. The fully renovated, four-story building features an outdoor terrace and green roof, two maker spaces, public computers, space to work and learn, and a fabulous collection of books for all ages. It also includes a large auditorium space, a North Carolina/Local History Room, numerous study rooms and meeting spaces, and a STEAM Literacy Center.

 

Durham County Utilities

Durham County provides sewer service to the southeast portion of Durham County (both inside and outside the Durham City limits), and serves the Research Triangle Park areas within Durham County. The County has long made strategic, targeted investments to ensure that our utility systems serving the Research Triangle Park Service Area are well prepared to facilitate economic development investments. This is done to ensure both current and future capacity is available to enhance our competitive position. Utilities Staff maintains significant expertise in handling a wide array of industrial discharges. 

Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant

The flagship of the Durham County wastewater utility is the Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant (TWWTP). The TWWTP is rated for an average daily flow of 12 million gallons per day, and serves as the infrastructure engine of Research Triangle Park within Durham County. The plant receives approximately ten-million dollars in annual investment through operations, maintenance, and rehabilitation which supports industry operations vital to the tax base of Durham County. The high-performance of this plant plays a crucial role in the success of RTP.

American Tobacco Campus South Deck

The South Deck within American Tobacco Campus was a $14M investment by Durham County and served as a catalyst of growth for Downtown Durham and neighboring American Tobacco Campus (ATC). The deck is often used for events, such as Durham Bulls games or shows at the Durham Performing Arts Center, as well as visitors to the shops, restaurants, and entertainment at the ATC. 

 

Treyburn Corporate Park - Snow Hill Lift Station

Durham County recently invested $15 million in replacing and upgrading the Snow Hill Lift Station that provides sanitary sewer service in unincorporated Treyburn Corporate Park in Northern Durham. This essential County investment supports the thousands of employees and billions of dollars in investment in the park, both for today as well as into the future. 

RDU Airport

Located 14 miles from downtown Durham, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority has played a central role in the growth of the Research Triangle Region since 1939. Nearly 15.5 million passengers passed through RDU in 2024.  RDU ofters a wide range of nonstop destinations, including to New York's LaGuardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airports, San Fransisco's International Airport (SFO), Chicago's Midway (MDW) and O'Hare Airports (ORD), London's Heathrow Airport (LHR), Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), Toronto's Pearson International Airport (YZR) and Mexico City's International Airport (MEX). 

Raleigh-Durham International Airport is governed by the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority, an eight-member board that was established by the N.C. General Assembly in 1939. The Airport Authority responsible for the development, operation and maintenance of RDU. The Cities of Durham and Raleigh along with Durham and Wake Counties each appoint two members to the board.

RDU Airport is located at the western edge of Wake County, halfway between the Cities of Durham and Raleigh. Durham and Wake Counties along with the Cities of Durham and Raleigh co-own the airport.

 

HUB RTP

Hub RTP will be an urban, walkable district where work/life balance takes on a whole new meaning. 

HUB RTP is the 100 acre property located in the heart of North America’s largest science park, Research Triangle Park. Phase I will include many amenities that are currently absent from RTP’s 7,000 acres, such as: retail, restaurants, new public parks, a central marketplace, multifamily residential and hotels. The Research Triangle Foundation anticipates a direct investment of more than $1 billion.

The long-term plan includes building more than 150,000SF of retail space to encourage pedestrian traffic past work-day hours. Phase Two will include hotels, convention center, high rises and apartments, potentially adding more than 1 million square feet.
