Move-A-Bull City Open Streets Event Invites You to Play in the Streets on Oct. 5

Durham, NC - Downtown Durham streets will be open temporarily for fun at the Move-A-Bull City Open Streets event on Sunday, October 5, 2025, from noon to 4 p.m. That’s when a 1.2 mile stretch of Blackwell, Corcoran and Foster Streets will be closed off to vehicles, but open to people.
“People traffic will replace car traffic and the streets will become “paved parks” where people of all ages and abilities can come out to have fun, and at the same time, improve their health,” said John Tallmadge, executive director of Bike Durham, which is co-hosting the event with the City of Durham Transportation Department and the Durham County Public Health Department’s Partnership for a Healthy Durham.
Attendees will be able to participate in a variety of activities in themed zones:
- Vision Zero Traffic Safety Zone brings attention to street safety to decrease traffic deaths. This will include a demonstration of a safe intersection design at Blackwell Street and Jackie Robinson Drive
- Wellness Zone features health screenings
- Physical Activity Zone with yoga, Zumba classes and more
- Rolling Zone, where you can get bike repairs, challenge yourself on skating obstacles and cycling ramps
- Community Heroes Zone where you can meet first responders and transit workers and touch their trucks
- Local Government Connections Zone, where you can learn about how your city and county governments work for you
- Arts Zone, where you can create your own special work of art
There will also be food trucks and more activities for the whole family.
Open Streets are programs taking place all over the world to encourage the public to think differently about how streets can be used for other activities besides driving.
Walk, ride, run, or roll to Move-A-Bull City Open Streets if you can, but if you have to drive, free parking will be available at these parking lots and garages near the event:
- American Tobacco Parking South Deck, 653 W Jackie Robinson Dr
- American Tobacco Campus North Deck, 305 W Pettigrew St
- Chapel Hill Street Garage, 326 E Chapel Hill St.
- Durham Centre Parking lot 451 Rigsbee Ave.
Also, a map of closed-off streets and alternate routes can be found at Move-A-Bull.org.
