Statement from the Durham Board of Commissioners on Recent Durham Library Matter

The Durham County Board of Commissioners is providing the following update regarding the recent library matter. 

The directive concerning Pride Month displays has been rescinded. Pride Month displays will continue, along with other displays recognizing the diverse communities, cultures, and histories represented throughout Durham County.  

We also want to be clear that no books were banned, censored, restricted, or removed.  Additionally, no library programming was restricted.  In the coming weeks, the Board will develop guidance and clarity for staff to protect these celebrations in Durham County so that similar situations will not happen again. 

The Durham County Board of Commissioners expresses its unanimous and unequivocal support for every member of our community.  Furthermore, we remain committed to maintaining libraries that are welcoming, inclusive, and accessible to everyone in our community, while continuing to serve the diverse interests and needs of County residents.
