State of Emergency Declared in Durham County

Declaration runs from 5:00pm on January 24th through January 26th
January 24, 2026

Durham, N.C. – Durham County Board of Commissioners’ Chair Dr. Mike Lee declared a “State of Emergency” today ahead of a major winter storm expected Saturday night through Monday morning. The storm is predicted to bring snow, sleet, freezing rain, and extreme cold temperatures to the Triangle.

In issuing the declaration, Chair Lee said, “The latest forecasting indicates we will experience hazardous travel conditions, downed trees, and power outages during this period.  The County encourages all of our residents to prepare accordingly and use caution until the event has passed”.

“Winter Storm Fern” is already impacting much of the country. As outlined in the County’s declaration, the storm “will likely damage public and private property, could seriously disrupt essential utility services and systems, and place lives at risk from the extreme cold within Durham County.”

At this time, no specific restrictions are included in the declaration.
