Local Artist to Display Memorial Quilt in Durham County

December 2, 2024

Beginning December 2, the Durham County Human Services Building will become the host location for the Durham Homicide and Victims of Violent Death Memorial Quilt by artist Sidney Brodie. The quilt exhibit will be located in the second floor lobby until Monday, December 30. The exhibit will be closed during winter holidays, December 24-26.

The quilt honors the lives of homicide victims in Durham, with a patch added for each life lost. Brodie began needling the quilt in the mid 1990’s following the death of a Durham toddler killed on the front porch of her neighbor’s home. The quilt currently includes 1,054 patches,

In June of 2018, PBS, in collaboration with UNC-TV and SCETV, released As in Death, a documentary highlighting Brodie’s creation of the memorial quilt. The film is a part of the PBS documentary series Reel South directed by Mark Kammel. The film will be shown on various screens across the county throughout the month.

A kick-off event to spotlight the placement of the Durham Homicide and Victims of Violent Death Memorial Quilt Exhibit will take place on Wednesday, December 4, 3:00-4:00PM, at the Durham County Human Services Building, Conference Rooms A, B and C. Brodie will make a short presentation, answer questions, and invite attendees to view the quilt. The event is free and open to the public.

The Durham County Human Services Building is located at 414 E. Main St., Durham, NC 27701.
