Our FEI Division is Making an Impact on Food Insecurity in Durham

July 18, 2025

Durham, N.C.--- Our Food Economic and Independence Division (FEI) annually recognizes Hunger Awareness Month during the month of June by collecting donations of non-perishable food to giveaway to the public. The team worked hard gathering donations from staff within the DSS office and by receiving generous donations from grocery chains: Publix and Wegman’s. Both retailers were very generous this year, and our team was appreciative as they were able to giveaway more food than ever before to those in need. The team gave food away at three locations over the course of two days. The team of social workers, program managers and IMC staff divided themselves up and gave away food at the Super Compare Foods at Avondale Drive, the first-floor lobby of the Human Services Building, and at the LGBTQ Center of Durham.

This year the FEI team had a special guest from our partner from the Durham County Public Health Department, Jasmine St. Denny, with the DINE & Double Bucks program. Jasmine and her colleagues combined with our FEI Division make for a powerful collaboration in providing Durham residents not only with food, but ways in which they can stretch their dollar!

If you need food benefits, you can apply online at: https://epass.nc.gov, or visit our offices at the Human Services Building, 414 E. Main St. in downtown Durham, Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
