From the Desk of the County Manager, June 18, 2026

Greetings Durham!
As we take time this month to honor and celebrate fathers and father figures across Durham County, I want to reflect on the lasting impact they have on the strength and well‑being of our families. Fathers contribute in countless ways by providing unconditional guidance, encouragement, protection and love. Their presence improves their children's lives and strengthens the foundation of our community. This month offers us an opportunity to recognize their dedication and to uplift the programs and partnerships throughout Durham County that support fathers in fulfilling their essential roles.
One meaningful program underway is the Durham County Department of Social Services' (DSS)’ new Fatherhood Initiative. This program is intentionally designed to better engage and support fathers who have been or are currently involved with Durham County's child welfare system. This initiative will provide fathers with access to the resources, tools and support needed to thrive as parents. Its goal is simple yet powerful: to help fathers strengthen their role in their children’s lives and build positive outcomes for their families. By creating a space where fathers feel valued, respected and heard, we are investing in stronger families and a stronger Durham.
As part of this important work, DSS will host a community event on Monday, June 22, at the Community Family Life & Recreation Center at Lyon Park. This gathering will serve as an open forum for fathers to share their experiences, challenges and perspectives. The discussion will focus on the barriers many fathers face, strategies for navigating life’s complexities and ways they can effectively advocate for themselves and their families. It will be a space for fathers to share what meaningful support means to them. Their voices will guide the development of a program that is responsive, empowering and customized to their unique needs. Please help shape this program by completing this short survey.
A special thanks to Tanza Moye, Special Services Supervisor and LINKS Program Manager, and TaQuan Lynch from the Durham County Department of Social Services, who have helped shape this vision and move it forward. I want to thank them for their commitment to this important work.
“Fathers are vital to the strength and stability of our families and supporting them is essential to building a stronger Durham,” said Maggie Clapp, Director, Durham County Department of Social Services. “In particular, the Fatherhood Initiative allows us to deepen our engagement with fathers and ensure they have the tools and encouragement they need to thrive. I am grateful for the leadership of Tanza and TaQuan as we work together to uplift fathers and strengthen families across our community.”
This work is strengthened by a network of programs across Durham County that support men’s health and well‑being.
June 15-21 is International Men’s Health Week. The Durham County Men’s Health Council, housed within Public Health, plays a key role in promoting wellness, education and community engagement among men and fathers. Join the Council this Saturday, June 20, for their community walks at Northgate Park (300 W. Club Boulevard, Durham, NC 27704) from 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. These and other Durham County initiatives support men's health and wellness, ultimately allowing them to be fully present for their families.
As we celebrate fathers this month, I am reminded that when we uplift fathers, we uplift entire communities.
Finally, please remember that Durham County Government will be closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. Take this day to reflect on its historical relevance and to celebrate freedom and resilience in our nation.
Until next week,
Claudia Hager
Durham County Manager
