Durham County to Observe Labor Day 2025

Durham, N.C. - Durham County Government will close most offices in observance of the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 1, 2025. All County offices will reopen with their normal hours of operation on Tuesday, September 2.

Durham Board of County Commissioners
The Board of County Commissioners approved moving its monthly Work Session – usually held on the first Monday of each month – to Tuesday, September 2 at 9 a.m. due to the Labor Day holiday. Download the agenda, when available, here.

Durham County General Services
Convenience Centers
The Durham County General Services Department will close all three of its solid waste and recycling convenience sites on September 1. Residents of unincorporated Durham County with a current 2025-2026 solid waste decal can resume disposal of garbage, recycling and yard waste at the County’s Convenience sites on September 2. The Northern Durham and Redwood sites open at 7 a.m. and the Parkwood site opens at 10:30 a.m.
Please note that the 2025-2026 solid waste decals were included in tax bills mailed to residents the second week of August. Find out more information about solid waste decals here.
Roadside Recycling
Unincorporated residents participating in the County’s Roadside Recycling Program (green recycling carts) will have no changes to their recycling collection due to the Labor Day holiday. Unincorporated residents are reminded that carts should be set out by 6 a.m. on their regularly scheduled pick-up day.
Residents of unincorporated Durham County who want to keep track of their recycling collection schedule should download the new “Durham County Recycles” mobile application. Residents can download the mobile app for free on Apple devices in the App Store or Android devices in the Google Play Store.

Durham County Library
All Durham County Library locations will close on September 1 in observance of Labor Day. Locations will reopen on September 2.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the many online services provided by visiting DurhamCountyLibrary.org.
Durham County Public Health
The Durham County Department of Public Health (DCoDPH) will follow the Durham County Government Labor Day holiday schedule and close on Monday, September 1, reopening on September 2.
For Public Health emergencies during the holiday closure, including communicable disease reporting, environmental health and suspected foodborne illnesses, call 911 and ask for the Durham County Department of Public Health’s response team member on call.

Durham County Social Services
The Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) will follow the Durham County Government Labor Day holiday schedule and close on September 1.
Residents are encouraged to call 919-560-4600 to reach an on-call social worker to report child abuse and neglect. Call 984-243-1280 to report adult abuse and neglect to an on-call social worker. DSS will reopen and operate according to its normal hours of operation on September 2.

Durham County Cooperative Extension
The Durham County Cooperative Extension will be closed for Labor Day on September 1. All programs which usually operate on Mondays will not be held. The Extension will reopen with normal business hours on September 2.
Over the holiday, the public may drop off soil sample boxes and pick up sample supplies from the outside station located at the blue box to the right of the Extension building at 721 Foster Street.

Durham County Sheriff
Durham County’s Sheriff Office’s patrol division, as always, is available 24/7. The Sheriff’s Administration and Records Division will be closed on September 1 and will reopen on September 2.
