Durham County Veteran Services Hosts 2025 Veterans Day Recognition and Celebration Program on Nov. 10

Facts:

  • Durham County recognizes U.S. military veterans of all branches of service during a celebration of patriotism, service, and sacrifice each year on or near Veterans Day.
  • The community is invited to join in honoring service members and their families at the 14th Annual Veterans Day Recognition and Celebration Program to be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Monday, November 10 in Conference Rooms A, B, and C of the Durham County Human Services Building, located at 414 E. Main Street.
  • Free public parking with parking validation is available in the 500 E. Main Street parking deck (114 S. Elizabeth Street), beside the Human Services Building. You must present your parking ticket at the Departmental Lobby service area to receive validation. Please note, if you do not receive validation, regular parking charges will apply. Paid parking is available inside the Queen Street Parking Deck (115 N. Queen Street) above the first level. There are also paid parking options on the street and at the Church Street parking deck located on the 100 block of East Main Street.
  • The Durham County 2025 Veterans Day Recognition and Celebration Program will feature a keynote address from Durham County Director of Public Health and veteran, Dr. Rodney Jenkins.
  • The theme for this year’s event is “Loyalty and Service: Honoring all Who Served" intending to recognize the contributions of every individual who has served in the United States Armed Forces, regardless of their branch or length of service.
  • “Veterans Day is about taking time to thank all who served in our armed forces,” said Linzie Atkins, Director of Durham County Veteran Services. “We owe a debt of gratitude for the loyalty and service each veteran has given to our country.”
  • Veterans from all eras of service will be invited to participate in the Walk of Honor during the County’s annual celebration of Veterans.
  • Capt. Helen E. Tripp, Manager of Community Paramedics with Durham County Emergency Medical Services, will sing the National Anthem.
  • The program will include a Prisoner of War/Missing In Action (POW/MIA) presentation.
  • The event is free and open to the public. The media are encouraged to attend this event of high honor.

  • The 2025 Veterans Day holiday is Tuesday, November 11. The National Ceremony is held each year on November 11 at Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony commences precisely at 11 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by Veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries.
  • The County continues to participate in Operation Green Light which began on November 4 and runs until November 11, shining a green light to support military veterans, as well as raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources that are available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families.
  • Most offices operated by the County will be closed for the Veterans Day holiday on Tuesday, November 11.
