Durham County Government Announces Winter Holidays Closures

Durham, N.C. – Durham County Government will close most offices in observance of the winter holidays from Wednesday, December 24 through Friday, December 26, 2025, with all offices reopening with their normal hours of operation on Monday, December 29. County government offices will also close in recognition of the New Year’s Day holiday on Thursday, January 1, 2026, reopening with normal hours on Friday, January 2.

Durham County General Services
Convenience Sites
The Durham County General Services Department will close the three Solid Waste and Recycling Convenience sites on December 24, 25, and 26. The Redwood and Northern Sites will reopen on Saturday, Dec. 27 and the Parkwood site on Monday, Dec. 29. The sites will also close January 1 and all will reopen on Jan. 2. Durham County residents with a current 2025-26 solid waste decal can dispose of garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky items at the County’s Convenience Sites during their regular schedules.
Roadside Recycling
The Durham County curbside recycling customers who have their regular pickups on Dec. 25 will have their collection on Saturday, Dec. 27. Customers with pickup scheduled for Thursday, January 1, will have their pickup on Saturday, January 3. All residents are reminded to set out their recycling bins before 6 a.m. on the day of pickup, to avoid a missed collection. Residents who want to keep track of their recycling collection schedule should download the “Durham County Recycles” mobile application. Residents can download the mobile app for free on Apple devices in the App Store or Android devices in the Google Play Store.

Durham County Sheriff
Durham County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division, as always, is available 24/7. The Sheriff’s Administration and Records Division will be closed December 24-26. It will reopen normal hours on December 29.
The Sheriff’s Administration and Records Division will also be closed on Thursday, January 1, and reopen on Friday, January 2.

Durham County Library
All Durham County Library locations will be closed from December 24-26 for the winter holidays, reopening on Saturday, December 28 with normal hours. All library locations will also close at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, remaining closed on Thursday, January 1, and will reopen with normal hours on Friday, January 2.

Durham County Public Health
The Durham County Department of Public Health will follow the Durham County Government winter holidays closing schedules.
For Public Health emergencies during the holiday closures, including communicable disease reporting, environmental health and suspected foodborne illnesses, please call 911 and ask for the Durham County Department of Public Health’s response team member on-call.

Durham County Social Services
On December 24-26, the Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) will close its offices for the winter holidays, reopening on Monday, December 29. DCoDSS will also close Thursday, January 1, for New Year’s Day, reopening on Friday, January 2.
Residents are encouraged to call 919-560-4600 to reach an on-call social worker to report child abuse and neglect. Call 984-243-1280 to report adult abuse and neglect to an on-call social worker.

Durham County Cooperative Extension
The Durham County Cooperative Extension will be closed from December 24-26 for the winter holidays. The Extension will reopen with normal business hours on Monday, December 29. The office will also close on Thursday, January 1, for New Year’s Day and reopen on Friday, January 2.
There will be no Welcome Baby Giving Closet on Friday, December 26 or Friday, January 1. To make an appointment to attend another Giving Closet date, please call 919-560-7150. Donations of gently used clothing and coats for children in sizes 0-8 for the Welcome Baby Annual Winter Coat Drive are accepted only during normal business hours. Please do not leave donations when office is closed.
