Durham County Developing Bus Rapid Transit Vision Plan

Durham, N.C. – Durham County is developing a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Vision Plan to examine corridor improvements and service investments for a comprehensive network of high-capacity transit services across Durham County.
The Vision Plan seeks to enhance mobility and connectivity for residents and visitors across Durham County over the next 30 years using the dedicated sales tax dedicated to public transportation in the county. The Durham County Transportation Department is seeking community input throughout the process to ensure the Vision Plan reflects local priorities.
During the development of the plan, Durham County will actively engage with the public through a variety of informative and interactive virtual and in-person events. Durham County invites all residents to share their feedback by completing the project survey and to participate in upcoming neighborhood meetings at the end of October and early November. Details about the Vision Plan, the project survey, and any upcoming neighborhood meetings or pop-up events are available on the project’s website.
The Vision Plan will identify and prioritize corridors for BRT-level service. BRT is a high-quality, bus-based transit service that provides safe, reliable, and frequent transportation. BRT services can feature high-frequency service, dedicated bus lanes, enhanced passenger amenities, and advanced traffic prioritization technology. The Durham BRT Vision Plan will assess strategies for BRT services implementation. The plan will also assess where improvements, such as dedicated transit lanes, transit signal prioritization, and stop placement could provide substantial benefits.
“Residents and our governing boards requested that we prioritize quick and reliable bus service during the development of the 2023 Durham Transit Plan,” said Ellen Beckmann, Durham County Transportation Director. “The BRT Vision Plan will identify the specific projects and corridors that we want to advance using our local sales tax to accomplish this goal.”
The County will coordinate with regional stakeholders and major partners, including the City of Durham, GoTriangle, Triangle West Planning Organization (TWPO) and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to ensure a cohesive BRT vision. The City of Durham is actively studying the development of a BRT corridor in Central Durham. Details about the Central Durham BRT can be found on the City of Durham’s website. The County’s Vision Plan will incorporate findings from the City’s project, technical analysis and resident feedback to create a long-term view of how to prioritize additional future BRT corridors.
