Commissioner Dr. Lee elected chair of the Board, Allam vice chair
December 3, 2025

Durham, N.C. – On Monday, December 1, 2025, during the Durham Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) Work Session, the Board elected its new Chair and Vice Chair for the upcoming year. The chair and vice chair of a county board are selected by the commissioners through an internal election held during the Board’s organizational session each year.

County Attorney Larissa Willamson presided over the election of Commissioner Dr. Mike Lee as Chair of the Board. Dr. Lee was unanimously elected by the Board. He then presided over the election of Commissioner Nida Allam who will now serve as Vice Chair. She was elected by a 5-0 vote.

Following his appointment, Dr. Lee spoke to fellow board members saying, “I am deeply grateful for your trust in me to lead this wonderful Board into whatever is next. I do not take this lightly. I do not take what you have bestowed lightly at all. This is very important, and it is my honor to do that.” He continued his post-election remarks addressing the community, “To Durham, I look forward to representing you as your chair. It is just a title. I am still just a commissioner. I am still just Mike Lee. … What I am asking of Durham is just to do good stuff.”

The Board will hold the final scheduled Regular Session of 2025 on Monday, December 8, 2025, at 7 p.m.
