County to Observe Memorial Day 2026

Durham, N.C. - Durham County Government will close most offices in observance of the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 25, 2026. All County offices will reopen with their normal hours of operation on Tuesday, May 26.

Memorial Day Remembrance Event

The Durham County Veteran Services Department invites residents and visitors to attend their annual Memorial Day Remembrance Event on Monday, May 25, 2026, at 9 a.m. The ceremony, which honors America’s military service members who gave their lives in service to our country, will take place in Conference Room 126 in the William V. Bell Building (formerly the Administration II Building), located at 201 E. Main Street in downtown Durham.

The program will feature a roll call recognizing the more than 350 known Durham County veterans who died in service to our nation. It will also include the POW/MIA Table Ceremony, paying tribute to military personnel who were taken as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action. The event will close with the laying of a wreath at the County’s war memorials and the playing of “Taps,” the traditional bugle call performed at military memorials and burials.

Board of County Commissioners

The Durham Board of County Commissioners will hold its second Regular Session for the month at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26. The meeting was moved from the normal fourth Monday of the month due to the Memorial Day Holiday.

 

The session will feature the Public Hearing on County Manager’s 2026-2027 Recommended Budget.

Durham County General Services

The Durham County General Services Department will close its solid waste and recycling convenience sites on May 25. Durham County residents with a current 2025-2026 solid waste decal can resume disposal of garbage, recycling and yard waste at the County’s Convenience sites on May 26, during normal business hours.

 

The Durham County roadside recycling schedule for customers normally serviced the week of May 25 will maintain the same schedule. All residents are reminded to set out their recycling bins before 6 a.m. on the day of pickup, to avoid a missed collection. 

 

Residents who want to keep track of their recycling collection schedule should download the new “Durham County Recycles” mobile application. Residents can download the mobile app for free on Apple devices in the App Store or Android devices in the Google Play Store.

Durham County Library

All Durham County Library locations will be closed on Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day. All locations will reopen on Tuesday, May 26 for regular business hours.

Durham County Public Health

The Durham County Department of Public Health (DCoDPH) will follow the Durham County Government Memorial Day holiday schedule and close on Monday, May 25.

 

For Public Health emergencies during the holiday closure, including communicable disease reporting, environmental health and suspected foodborne illnesses, call 911 and ask for the Durham County Department of Public Health’s response team member on-call. 

 

Public Health clinics, including the vaccination clinic, will reopen on Tuesday, May 26.

Durham County Social Services

The Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) will follow the Durham County Government Memorial Day schedule and close on Monday, May 25.

 

Residents are encouraged to call 919-560-4600 to reach an on-call social worker to report child abuse and neglect. Call 984-243-1280 to report adult abuse and neglect. DSS will reopen and operate according to its normal hours of operation on Tuesday, May 26.

Durham County Sheriff

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office patrol division, as always, is available 24/7. The Sheriff’s Administration and Records departments will be closed on May 25 and reopen on May 26.

Durham County Cooperative Extension

The Durham County Cooperative Extension will close on Monday, May 25 for the Memorial Day holiday and reopen on Tuesday, May 26, with normal business hours. All extension programming scheduled for Mondays will not be held.

During the holiday closure, the public may drop off soil sample boxes and pick up sample supplies from the outside station located in the blue box to the right of the Extension building at 721 Foster St.
