County Veteran Services to Commemorate Memorial Day 2026

Event on May 25 at 9 a.m. on 1st Floor of the William V. Bell Building
May 11, 2026

Durham, N.C. – Durham County Veteran Services invites residents and visitors to attend their annual Memorial Day Remembrance Event on Monday, May 25, 2026, at 9 a.m. The ceremony, which honors America’s military service members who gave their lives in service to our country, will take place in Conference Room 126 in the William V. Bell Building (formerly the Administration II Building), located at 201 E. Main Street in downtown Durham.

The program will feature a roll call recognizing the more than 350 known Durham County veterans who died in service to our nation. It will also include the POW/MIA Table Ceremony, paying tribute to military personnel who were taken as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action. The event will close with the laying of a wreath at the County’s war memorials and the playing of “Taps,” the traditional bugle call performed at military memorials and burials.

“Memorial Day is a time for the Durham community to come together to remember those service members who made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Linzie Atkins, Director of Durham County Veteran Services. “We also want to honor and support their surviving family members who bear the burden of grief every day.”

This Memorial Day event is free and open to the public. Seating will be available, and light refreshments will be served. Parking is available on surrounding streets and in nearby municipal garages.
