County Announces Delayed Opening, February 3

Some county services impacted by adjusted scheduling
February 2, 2026

Durham, N.C. Due to the potential for hazardous travel conditions following Winter Storm Gianna, Durham County Government will delay opening non-essential offices on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. Most County offices will open at 10:30 a.m., resuming normal business operations at that time.

Read further to note specific impact(s) to services resulting from the delayed opening:

Durham County General Services

County Convenience Sites 

Northern and Parkwood Solid Waste and Recycling Convenience Sites will follow the Durham County Government schedule and delay opening on February 3. The Redwood Convenience Site will remain closed.    

Roadside Recycling Collection  

Due to inclement weather and hazardous road conditions, the collection route for Monday, February 2 for unincorporated Durham County residents has been rescheduled to Wednesday, February 4.

Recycling collection for Tuesdays will be collected on February 3 starting at 8am. Roads must be clear before collections can resume.

Residents are encouraged to download the “Durham County Recycles” mobile application for the latest service alerts. Residents can download the mobile app for free on Apple devices in the App Store or Android devices in the Google Play Store.

Durham County Department of Public Health 

The Durham County Department of Public Health will follow the Durham County Government schedule and delay opening on February 3.              

For Public Health emergencies during delayed openings or closures, including communicable disease reporting, environmental health and suspected foodborne illnesses, please call 911 and ask for the Durham County Department of Public Health’s response team member on-call.

Durham County Social Services 

The Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) will also follow the Durham County Government schedule and delay opening on February 3.              

Residents are encouraged to call 919-560-4600 to reach an on-call social worker to report child abuse and neglect. Residents should call 984-243-1280 to report adult abuse and neglect, an on-call social worker will respond.

 Durham County Library 

All Durham County Library locations will delay opening on February 3. All library locations will open at 11:30 a.m.

Durham County Sheriff 

All Durham County Courthouse operations are delayed on February 3. This delayed opening will impact all District and Superior Courts, Clerk of Court, and Durham County Sheriff’s Office business office functions, resuming normal hours at 10:30 a.m.

Durham County Cooperative Extension 

All Durham County Library locations will follow the Durham County Government schedule and delay opening on February 3.

Residents and visitors are advised to travel carefully when commuting is necessary as icy conditions persist on area roads, especially bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas, following the recent winter storm. Temperatures following the winter storm raised throughout the day, melting ice which may cause many roads to remain hazardous, particularly bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas overnight.
