County Adjusts Opening Hours Following Winter Storm

Some county services impacted by delayed opening
January 27, 2026

Durham, N.C. — Due to the potential for refreezing overnight and early tomorrow morning, Durham County Government will delay opening on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. All County offices will open at 10:30 a.m. and resume normal business operations at that time.

Read below for details on how the delayed opening will affect County services:

County Convenience Sites 

The Durham County Solid Waste and Recycling Convenience Sites will follow the Durham County Government schedule and delay opening on January 28.  

The reopening of the Redwood Convenience Site, currently closed due to hazardous conditions onsite, will be determined following assessment of the location tomorrow morning. Follow the County’s social media posts for updates on this location.

Residents are encouraged to use the Parkwood and Northern Convenience Sites until the Redwood site reopens.          

Roadside Recycling Collection  

The curbside recycling route for January 26, for unincorporated Durham County residents, will be picked up on Wednesday, January 28. 

Residents are encouraged to download the “Durham County Recycles” mobile application for the latest service alerts. Residents can download the mobile app for free on Apple devices in the App Store or Android devices in the Google Play Store.

Durham County Department of Public Health 

The Durham County Department of Public Health will follow the Durham County Government schedule and delay opening on January 28.              

For Public Health emergencies during the holiday closures, including communicable disease reporting, environmental health and suspected foodborne illnesses, please call 911 and ask for the Durham County Department of Public Health’s response team member on-call.

Durham County Social Services 

The Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) will also follow the Durham County Government schedule and delay opening on January 28.              

Residents are encouraged to call 919-560-4600 to reach an on-call social worker to report child abuse and neglect. Residents should call 984-243-1280 to report adult abuse and neglect, an on-call social worker will respond.

 Durham County Library 

All Durham County Library locations will follow the Durham County Government schedule and delay opening on January 28.

Durham County Sheriff 

Durham County’s Sheriff Office’s patrol division, as always, is available 24/7. The Sheriff’s Administration and Records Division will follow the Durham County Government schedule and delay opening on January 28.

Durham County Cooperative Extension 

All Durham County Cooperative Extension will follow the Durham County Government schedule and delay opening on January 28. All morning programs and activities scheduled before 10:30 a.m. are canceled. Afternoon programs and operations will proceed as planned.

Durham County Courthouse 

The Durham County Courthouse will modify their operating schedule for Wednesday, January 28. The building will open and the courts will begin at 10:30 a.m.
