“Move-A-Bull City: An Open Streets Event” on October 5

Durham, N.C. - Bike Durham, the City of Durham Transportation Department, and Durham County Department of Public Health’s Partnership for a Healthy Durham are excited to announce a new collaboration to bring Move-A-Bull City, an Open Streets event, to the Bull City on Sunday, October 5, from 12 to 4 p.m.
Move-A-Bull City is an “open streets” event, where a 1.2 mile stretch of Blackwell, Corcoran, and Foster streets through the heart of downtown Durham will be temporarily opened to people and closed to cars and trucks. From Morehead Avenue on the south end (near the Durham Bulls Athletic Park) to Trinity Avenue on the north (near the start of the Ellerbee Creek Trail), people traffic will replace car traffic, and the streets will be transformed into car-free public spaces where people of all ages, abilities, and social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds can come enjoy walking, biking, rolling, playing, and community celebration. The free event will promote healthy, active living, street safety, and equitable access to public space.
“This is a celebration of Durham’s people and neighborhoods,” said Sean Egan, director of the City Transportation Department. “We’re opening our streets so residents can reimagine how they move through the city — and how our streets can serve everyone better.”
“Street safety is at the heart of our work,” said John Tallmadge, Executive Director of Bike Durham. “Move-A-Bull City shows what’s possible when we prioritize people over cars and create streets where everyone can move safely, regardless of how they get around.”
The event will feature Activation Zones up and down the corridor that highlight movement, health, arts, and community engagement:
- Vision Zero Zone (sponsored by AARP): bring attention to street safety
- Wellness Zone (sponsored by Duke Health): health screenings & fitness demos
- Bicycling Zone (sponsored by eBikeCentral): (sponsored by eBikeCentral): rides, repairs, and e-bike test drives
- Community Heroes Zone: meet first responders, check out cool trucks
- Physical Activity Zone: stretch, sweat, and groove with yoga, Zumba & more
- Local Government Connections Zone: learn how your city + county work for you
- Arts Zone: make something beautiful while live music plays — for all ages
The organizers are excited to invite local businesses, nonprofits, and neighborhood groups to become involved as sponsors or Activity Partners to bring more programming to the route.
This effort was included in the Community Health Improvement Plan managed by Durham County through the Partnership for a Healthy Durham. “Our streets can be powerful tools to support physical, mental, and community health,” said Dr. Rodney Jenkins, Durham County’s Health Director. “Move-A-Bull City will create an environment where health and connection can thrive — especially in communities where those opportunities aren’t always equally accessible.”
