Board of Health
What We Do
The Board of Health, previously the Public Health Board, formulates policies and procedures for the Durham County Department of Public Health. The board's authority is established by NC General Statutes 130A-35: “The Board of Health shall be the policy making, rule making and adjudicatory body for a county health department.”
The board works with Public Health Department administrators, clinicians, staff and our community to promote health, protect the environment and prevent disease.
The mission of the Durham County Health Department is "Working with our community to Promote Health, Protect the Environment and Prevent Disease."
The members of the Public Health Board are appointed by the Durham County Board of Commissioners.
The board shall be composed of 11 members:
- One physician licensed to practice medicine in this State
- One licensed dentist, one licensed optometrist
- One licensed veterinarian
- One registered nurse
- One licensed pharmacist
- One county commissioner
- One professional engineer
- Three representatives of the general public
Except as otherwise provided in the statutes all board member must be residents of Durham County.
