October: Disability Employment Awareness Month
National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) pays tribute to the accomplishments of individuals with disabilities whose work helps keep the nation’s economy strong and by reaffirming employers’ commitment to ensure equal opportunity for all citizens. In 1945 Congress first passed a law to celebrate National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. In 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. Some 25 years later, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This year the Department of Labor has named the theme NDEAM is “access to good jobs for all”, with the recognition that it not only matters what percentage of disabled workers are able to find a job, but that all workers, whether disabled or not, can find and participate in a quality job. According to the US Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities being twice as high as those who are not disabled. This month and all year we must work to increase both the quantity and quality of jobs that are accessible to people with disabilities.
