County Stormwater Project
Whispering Pines Mobile Home Park
Whispering Pines is a mobile home park in a suburban neighborhood located at the intersection of Lynn Road and Trailer Park Road near the eastern edge of the Durham City limits. The mobile home park is located in the Falls Lake Basin and within medium/high and high ranked project watersheds (Lick Creek and Little Lick Creek, respectively) and consists of three (3) parcels with a total of 55.75 acres. The Whispering Pines parcels contain approximately 4 acres of untreated impervious area located on private property. The site is adjacent to a gas line and easement located along two (2) of the Whispering Pines parcels.
The project will be approached holistically to include stream stabilization and restoration and a rain garden/bioretention area with educational signage. The bioretention area is proposed in the open space at the back of the mobile home park adjacent to the gas easement between the two Whispering Pines parcels. The proposed stormwater control measure would collect runoff from the mobile home park’s roofs by redirecting the existing drainage along the roads and the open field draining directly to the fork of Little Lick Creek and Little Lick Creek Tributary 2.
The County has applied for grant funding through multiple programs to assist in the total cost for this project. Once completed, Whispering Pines will not only have a new stormwater control measure to improve the water quality of currently untreated runoff, but will also have a healthier stream habitat throughout the property.
