Durham County is committed to vigorously pursuing sustainable practices in their operations. Initiatives include:
- A County high performance building policy requires all new buildings to meet high environmental standards. The County currently has 12 LEED buildings.
- The County has purchased several electric vehicles and installed public electric vehicle charging stations throughout Durham.
- A County bottled water policy prohibits the use of County funds to purchase single-use bottled water.
- A County idle reduction policy require employees to shut off vehicles when not in use to reduce fuel costs, maintenance, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.
