Open space lands provide excellent opportunities for environmental education and low-impact recreation. The Open Space Program manages four public parks and nature preserves. These include Hollow Rock Nature Park, a partnership with Orange County; Little River Regional Park, also a partnership with Orange County; the 2.2-mile Bottomlands Trail at New Hope Creek County Preserve; and Little River County Preserve in northern Durham.

The Open Space Program is also in the very early stages of planning two new open-to-the-public open space areas: a 129-acre parcel in northern Durham County and a 268-acre parcel in eastern Durham near Falls Lake.
