County Seeks Input on Redevelopment of DSS Main

Virtual sessions offer community input opportunities

What: Community Input Sessions on Future Redevelopment of DSS Main

Who: Durham County Engineering and Environmental Services

When: Session #1 – Saturday, January 16, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

          Session #2 – Tuesday, January 19, 2021 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Where: Both sessions are virtual via Zoom. See links below.

 

Facts:

  • Public input is sought from the community regarding the redevelopment of the public site formerly the Department of Social Services Main Building owned by Durham County Government located at 220 E. Main St.
  • The Durham Board of County Commissioners would like to hear from individuals and groups with interest in the project through two initial virtual sessions.
  • Durham County is evaluating options for the redevelopment of DSS Main – a nearly 50,000 square foot building that stands on 0.4 acres at the key gateway intersection to downtown Durham of East Main and South Roxboro streets.
  • The building, constructed in 1967 and located next to the historic Durham County Courthouse on Main Street, is currently vacant.
  • Sessions are facilitated by the Development Finance Initiative (DFI) at UNC Chapel Hill’s School of Government, which was engaged by the County in November 2020 to provide predevelopment services for the site.
  • The public is encouraged to choose one of the online input sessions being held on Saturday, January 16 (10 to 11:30 a.m.) and Tuesday, January 19, 2021 (5:30 to 7 p.m.)

  • An online survey for community members unable to attend a session will be available soon. The survey and updates will be posted to www.dconc.gov/DSSMain.
  • Additional public input sessions will be scheduled in Summer 2021 to gather input on the leading development plans.
