Durham, NC (Monday, September 18, 2023) - Friday evening just before 11:00 p.m., deputies from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office patrol division were on the 2500 block of Fayetteville Street when they observed the vehicle of a person wanted on felony warrants enter the parking lot of retail establishment. They confirmed it was owned by the wanted individual and then positively identified a person exiting the same vehicle as Taijawan Jamir Cross, 19, of Durham. Cross was wanted on multiple charges including Assault with a deadly weapon, Discharging a Weapon into occupied property, Assault on a female, and Felony conspiracy.
Deputies entered the store while Cross was still inside and took him into custody without incident. A search of Cross and his vehicle uncovered multiple weapons (a black Glock handgun and a short-barreled Del-Ton rifle), drugs, and an open container.
Cross was then transported to the Durham County Detention Center where he was served with his outstanding warrants and charged with Carrying a concealed gun and Possession of marijuana. He was seen by a magistrate and detained without bond. Hemade a first appearance in court this morning where his bond was reduced to $502,000.
“This is a clear case of our deputies, while on patrol, positively identifying a wanted subject and making a successful arrest without harm to the general public,” said Durham County Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead. “Because the arrest took place where people were out and about, our deputies took safety into consideration in order to take into custody an individual wanted on multiple felony charges.”
