Durham County Internal Auditor Richard C. Edwards to Retire

Post Date:06/12/2017

Durham, N.C. –

Durham County Government’s internal auditor will retire on Friday, June 16, 2017. Director of Internal Audit Richard Edwards, a certified internal auditor and certified governmental auditing specialist, recently announced his retirement and will depart his position nearly ten years following his date of hire on July 16, 2007.

“Richard understands our charge as public servants is significant and how his role for the last ten years has been critical to ensuring that our organization’s internal control process is operating effectively. He will be missed and difficult to replace,” said County Manager Wendell Davis in reflection of Edwards’ years of services with the County.

Edwards began working in government auditing in 1976. He dedicated 21 years of service to the United States General Accounting Office where he conducted a wide range of audits of issues such as national defense, tax policy and administration, and Medicaid and other federal safety net programs. The next five years of his professional audit career were spent with the City of Atlanta where he was responsible for audits of water safety, airport construction, and procurement practices.

Edwards began the final stretch of his career when he joined Durham County Government and dedicated the past decade to auditing a variety of issues in accordance with Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards. In his role, he was charged with planning, organizing, directing and executing a comprehensive program of internal auditing activities and projects for the County designed to strengthen control, improve operational efficiency, and ensure compliance with applicable policies and regulations.

“It has been a pleasure working for Durham County Government,” said Edwards. “I am grateful for the acceptance, cooperation, and assistance given to me during my tenure. I will miss the Durham County family and I wish everyone well as they continue the journey from ‘good to great.’”

Recruitment for the internal auditor position will begin immediately and remain ongoing until a replacement for Edwards is secured.
