SHERIFF'S OFFICE INVESTIGATION RESULTS IN FEDERAL CONVICTION

Durham, N.C. - A yearlong Durham County Sheriff’s Office investigation has led to the conviction and sentencing of two Durham men charged in a violent home invasion in March 2015. The Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with the Morrisville Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation worked together on the FBI Safe Streets Task Force.

“This was teamwork at its best. Our investigators work hard to get violent offenders off the street,” said Sheriff Mike Andrews. “Thanks to our law enforcement partners, justice was served in this important case."

On Wednesday, April 5, a federal judge sentenced James Thorpe, 25, and Joshua Melvin, 23, both of Durham, guilty of robbery and discharging a firearm during a home invasion. The Court sentenced Thorpe to 480 months in federal custody; Melvin will serve 444 months in federal prison. According to federal prosecutors, both men entered a home in Morrisville with multiple people inside, including a small child. Thorpe and Melvin threatened the child in exchange for money. When a woman inside the residence tried to intervene, she was repeatedly beaten.

The intended target of the robbery, a promoter for a nightclub called Vegas Night Life, attempted to escape by jumping from the second-floor balcony of the home. He was shot before he landed on the ground. The gunmen led police on a car chase as they fled the crime scene. They were later apprehended and convicted in federal court after a thorough and comprehensive investigation conducted by the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, the Morrisville Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
