Durham, N.C.— The Durham County Sheriff's Office is pleased to announce Captain Raheem Aleem as the agency's new Hispanic Community Outreach Coordinator. Captain Aleem has served the Sheriff's Office for 20 years, leading its Community Services Division and School Resource Officer program. He is fluent in Spanish, a member of the Muslim community and he serves as a mentor for at-risk youth in the Durham community. Sheriff Mike Andrews appointed Capt. Aleem to his new role in December 2016.

"I saw a need in our community that requires a special set of skills," explained Sheriff Andrews. "Captain Aleem is already committed to building relationships with residents from all walks of life. This is our way of giving people more access to the Sheriff's Office."

In recent weeks, residents have expressed concern about immigration enforcement. The Sheriff’s Office does not actively search for individuals based on their immigration status. The Hispanic Community Outreach Coordinator is working to address concerns by:
  • Assisting Spanish-speaking crime victims
  • Organizing community meetings in the Hispanic community
  • Gathering community feedback for consideration as the Sheriff's Office revises and develops new policies
  • Promoting and expanding existing outreach services such as Creating Healthy Opportunities Inspiring Children to Have Everyday Success (C.H.O.I.C.E.S), a mentor program
Capt. Aleem serves on the Governor's Advisory Council on Hispanic/Latino Affairs.  He is an alumnus of North Carolina Central University. He earned an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate from the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission. He is also an Army veteran.

While Capt. Aleem will initially focus on Durham’s Hispanic community, all residents are encouraged to contact the new Community Outreach Coordinator at (919) 560-7474 or
