County to Observe 2026 Juneteenth Holiday

Durham, N.C. - Durham County Government will close most offices on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. All offices will reopen with normal operating hours on Monday, June 22.

Durham County General Services
All Durham County solid waste and recycling convenience sites will be closed on June 19. Residents with a valid 2025–2026 solid waste decal may resume dropping off garbage, recycling, and yard waste on June 20 during each site’s regular operating hours.
The Durham County roadside recycling schedule for customers normally serviced the week of June 15 will maintain the same schedule. All residents are reminded to set out their recycling bins before 6 a.m. on the day of pickup, to avoid a missed collection.
Residents who want to keep track of their recycling collection schedule should download the new “Durham County Recycles” mobile application. Residents can download the mobile app for free on Apple devices in the App Store or Android devices in the Google Play Store.

Durham County Library
All Durham County Library locations will be closed on June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. Regular operating hours at all locations will resume on Saturday, June 20.

Durham County Public Health
The Durham County Department of Public Health (DCoDPH) will be closed June 19, for the Juneteenth holiday and will reopen on June 22.
For Public Health emergencies during the closure including, communicable disease reports, environmental health concerns, or suspected foodborne illnesses call 911 and request the on‑call DCoDPH response team member.

Durham County Social Services
The Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) will be closed on June 19, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. To report child abuse or neglect, call 919-560-4600 to reach the on‑call social worker. To report adult abuse or neglect, call 984-243-1280. DSS will reopen on June 22 and resume normal operating hours.

Durham County Sheriff
The Durham County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division will operate 24/7 as usual. The Sheriff’s Records Division will remain open on June 19, as state courts will be operating on their normal schedules. The Sheriff’s Administration Division will be closed on June 19 and will reopen on June 22.

Durham County Courthouse
The Durham County Courthouse and all Durham County courts will be open and operating on their normal schedules on June 19.
Durham County Cooperative Extension
The Durham County Cooperative Extension will be closed on Friday, June 19, for the Juneteenth holiday and will reopen on June 22, with normal business hours.
During the closure, soil sample boxes may be dropped off, and supplies picked up, at the outdoor station located in the blue box to the right of the Extension building at 721 Foster St.

North Carolina Official Juneteenth Flag-Raising Ceremony
On June 1, the 21st Annual North Carolina Juneteenth Celebration officially kicked off with the North Carolina Official Juneteenth Flag-Raising Ceremony at the Durham County Courthouse, located at 510 S. Dillard Street. The official Juneteenth Flag will remain on display for community members and visitors to view through June 19.
